... a Unique Opportunity to Learn About Mount Teide from Within

Volcano Teide Experience was setup because of the various petitions from visitors to Mount Teide saying that people wanted to learn more about the volcano.

We started collaborating with Volcano Teide Experience in September 2015. This partnership lets us increase the number of activities and excursions we can offer in Tenerife’s natural environment and, more specifically, in the Teide area.

Tenerife Travel Secret

Volcano Teide Experience is the only active tourism company that regularly offers activities in the Las Cañadas del Teide National Park.

Activities with Volcano Teide Experience

The excursions and hiking experiences to try at Mount Teide are now within easy reach thanks to Volcano Teide Experience. There are transfers to the area from both the south and north of the island, but make sure to ask for a quotation as on some occasions the cost can vary. You can also combine many of these excursions into a full day trip up to 8 hours long. There are also recommended age limits for children for many of the different excursions. The excursions available include: a walk or cable car ride up to the summit of Mount Teide, a VIP excursion up to the summit, and a simple hike in Cañadas del Teide National Park with Volcano Teide Experience.

1. The most exclusive sunset in Tenerife can be seen from Mount Teide. You have the option of going up in the cable car when no-one else is able to, having a drink and enjoying the sunset on the highest peak in Spain. This excursion usually lasts two hours, and there are various activities organized at different times of the year, like ‘Noche de Guayota’ on 21st October and ‘Naturjazz’, which add that little special something to your trip up the volcano.

Tenerife Travel Secret

Volcano Teide Experience is the only company that offers an exclusive view of the highest sunset in Spain from the comfort of the cable car after it has been closed to the public. From up high, you’ll easily be able to see the silhouettes of Gran Canaria, La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro.

2. The sunset and stars on Teide excursion combines the experience of seeing the sunset from Mount Teide, having a glass of bubbly and a Canary Island cocktail dinner and being able to observe the stars with starlight guides and professional-grade long-range astronomical telescopes.

3. Stargazing activities are organised near the cable car area. You get to use professional-grade telescopes to see the stars, planets and other things in the Universe. Monitors help you see everything ‘up above’ that’s interesting, making this a must-do activity.

The sky above the Canary Islands, and above the Teide area in particular, is especially clear and well-suited to stargazing. We recommend that you go there during summer when the weather is most pleasant.

4. Guided Visit to the El Teide Observatory in Izaña. This tour gives you the opportunity to visit the largest solar observatory in the world. You’ll learn how the observatory operates and some interesting astronomical facts, as well as see the sun (and a solar flare) through a telescope. Be sure to try and guess which telescopes at the observatory belong to which country (or countries) 😊

5. Hike to the summit of the Teide, starting at Montaña Blanca, and then make your descent by cable car (not included in the price). You need to be in good shape for this excursion, which lasts roughly 9 hours. Once at the top, you’ll be able to access the crater with a special permit. Remember to bring your own food and drink!

After 8 years of construction, the Teide cable car opened on 27th July 1971, but the project began in 1930. The cable car has two cabins, each of which can carry 44 people. The journey takes 8 minutes, with 3 of them not particularly easy on your stomach 😊

Cable Car and Refugio de Altavista

Volcano Teide Experience has close links with the Teide cable car, making it the ideal mode of transport for those who don’t have much time but still want to enjoy a high-altitude experience. It is the most comfortable and relaxing way to ascend the 3,555m to the upper terminal. If you want to climb up to the peak, don’t forget to ask for a free permit.

The Refugio de Altavista is 3,260m above sea level and is the highest ‘accommodation’ in Spain. It is the perfect place for those who want to enjoy Mount Teide in a deeper and more meaningful way. Most people choose to spend the night at Refugio de Altavista so that they can watch the sunrise from the summit. This hotel will without a doubt be a spectacular experience for nature lovers.

Final Comments from the Authors

We think that the services offered by Volcano Teide Experience are ideal for visitors who want to learn more about Mount Teide, but have limited time to do so. Volcano Life Experience naturally offers more in-depth excursions, which give visitors more insight into the volcano and make their visit in this area of Tenerife an unforgettable experience.

We’ve been fortunate to do the majority of Volcano Teide Experience’s excursions so if you’re struggling to decide which one is best for you, we hope that this article will be of some help. We always recommend that you ideally bring warm layers (even in summer) and walking boots with you. Remember that you will be halfway up a volcano where the stones aren’t always as stable as you might think, and at more than 3,500m above sea level, there is every chance that it will get cold and windy (especially at night).
