... the perfect blend of green, blue and red

Open since 2005, the Ritz-Carlton Abama is huge and, since 2014, has had a capacity of more than 1,000 guests. Nevertheless, the hotel never seems to be crowded and always pays attention to the small details. The hotel spans across two parts: an Arabic-inspired fortress and four rows of villas which are tiered towards the beach.

The hotel has a large golf course, which was formerly Las Terrazas de Abama. There are also some tennis courts towards the main part of the hotel. These features continue past the villas up to the beach.

Origin of the Ritz-Carlton Abama

Architect Melvin Villaroel designed the Ritz-Carlton Abama. He also designed the drafts for the Sheraton La Caleta and Jardín Tropical. For the Ritz-Carlton Abama, Villaroel focused the design on the concept of Feng Shui. This led to buildings with rounded corners and plant life for a special combination with waterfalls leading into lakes. He also 'represented' fire with the red-coloured buildings. Keep reading to find out the origin of the name Abama. 😊

The Koi Karp lake is in Plaza del Sol. The bridge over the lake is based on the sun’s path on the day they started building the hotel.

General and communal services at the Ritz-Carlton Abama

The hotel is in a particularly sunny part of Tenerife, so you can use any one of its seven swimming pools. The central swimming pool looks like a lake and is great for families. There is a smaller swimming pool close to Los Chozos bar which has a relaxing atmosphere. The Mirador swimming pool is adult-only and exclusively for hotel guests. Jardín Persa is in the hotel's right-hand wing, overlooks the sea and is a very peaceful and intimate place. Among other things, it has a number of aromatic plants and a secluded swimming pool.

Jardín Persa has one of the hotel's best panoramic views. The view of the island of La Gomera in the evening is particularly spectacular. The garden is the ideal place to read, relax or simply get away from it all.

The hotel has a 2,500m² spa, and there are various boutiques, shops and a function room close to reception. You can get around the resort by buggy or mini-train, which departs every 15/30 minutes (high/low season). There is also a beach made of sand from Fuerteventura inside the resort. It isn't a private beach, but it's difficult to access. You can only get there on foot or by taking the cable car that is exclusively for guests.

Due to the variety of plant life, the hotel offers guests a botanical tour twice a week during high season. The hotel waters all the plants and trees with desalinated water. There is also an express general tour, which shows guests how to get around the hotel.

The resort is home to 90,000 individual trees, palm trees and plants from 300 different species. The contrast between abundant plant life, volcanic rock and the sea makes the hotel's aesthetic very appealing.

Restaurants and dining areas of the Ritz-Carlton Abama

The Ritz-Carlton Abama has a wide range of food available. The hotel offers lodging, breakfast and half-board options.

MB (Miguel Berasategui) is a very exclusive restaurant. It's open Tuesday-Saturday for dinner, and is usually closed from mid-June to mid-July. The restaurant has different areas, like an area near the entrance for having drinks and another reserved for private dinners. MB's wine cellar has the largest selection of Canary Island wines.

Abama Kabuki serves a combination of Japanese fusion and Mediterranean cuisine. The restaurant is in Tenerife, so it uses local fish but prepares them with Japanese cuts and techniques. Abama Kabuki is closed during September.

The Ritz-Carlton Abama is the only European hotel resort with three Michelin stars. MB has two and Abama Kabuki has one.

Restaurante El Mirador specialises in rice and fish dishes and is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. It has some luxurious views of La Gomera, especially in the evening.

Restaurante La Veranda serves a breakfast buffet from 7:30am-10:30am and has a terrace that leads out to the swimming pool. Restaurante Los Chozos is close to La Veranda. You should always reserve a table during high season. That way, you won't be disappointed by not being able to eat at the time you prefer.

There are a few bars which are perfect for having a relaxing drink. Lobby Bar is on the terrace near reception and plays live music in the evening. Cubanika is a 40s-themed Havana bar that serves cocktails and various mojitos and has live music at the weekend. Finally, the Sports Bar has an informal and sporty atmosphere.

The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company strives to make sure that all its hotels serve the same cocktail menu. Nine of the cocktails are on the official menu and 11 have been made specifically for the Ritz-Carlton Abama. If a guest likes a particular cocktail, they'll be able to enjoy it in both Tenerife and New York.

The Pool Bar in El Mirador Restaurant serves light snacks and fast food. The Beach Club on Abama Beach opens at midday and serves light snacks.

To ensure that guests come back to the hotel, the Ritz-Carlton Abama undergoes a lot of renovation and improvement work. This way, guests will see it as a different place, but with the same services they've always enjoyed.

The hotel has four rows of villas, with each row including 36 villas and a swimming pool. Tagor Villas is the second row. It's the same size and has the same type of room and decor as the other rows, but is for adults only. Guests have access to swimming pools, an on-demand concierge service, 24-hour room service and a private buggy for their entire stay. Guests can also have breakfast at Restaurante El Mirador.

Club Level at the Ritz-Carlton Abama

Club Level is a more exclusive area with a more personalised and detailed service. Children are also allowed (Tagor Villas are adults-only). Club Level has 20 Deluxe rooms, two suites and the Imperial Suite – all with an ocean view. The club room is always open and has marvellous views of the golf course. The club room's menu changes five times a day.

You can check in and check out directly in this area. Club Level really is one of Abama's best-kept secrets, as it's like a small hotel within a large hotel.

Kids-Ritz, the Ritz-Carlton Abama with children

Ritz-Kids has different entertainment and activity zones where children learn about the area whilst having fun. For example, they can learn about the island's wildlife (like pilot whales). The club is for children aged 4-12, and younger children must be accompanied by an adult. The club is open from 10am to midnight, and is free between 10am and 6pm. You need to reserve a place for your child between 6pm and midnight for an additional fee. Children can also eat in the mini club.

Ritz-Kids is quite big, so it's divided into different areas. There is the Planet Room and rooms for arts-and-crafts, cinema, Lego and relaxation. There is also a garden, where there are climbing frames, water slides and a football pitch. There is a new activity every hour, which varies according to the season and the number of children at the hotel. During high season, the club assigns an entertainer to every eight children, grouped by age. The club also speaks with handlers from Loro Parque once a week. The kids therefore get to learn more about a specific animal each time by asking questions.

Each of the company's Ritz-Kids clubs chooses 15 activities from the programme run by Jean-Michel Cousteau's Ocean Futures Society. The programme promotes four pillars: water, land, environmental responsibility and culture.

Final Comments from the Authors

The Ritz-Carlton Abama is an incredible hotel, with charm and care put into every detail. We had a real problem choosing what to write in this article and which photos to include. There's just so much to talk about and all the photos were really beautiful. 😊

Abama (as the locals call it) is a plant that is indigenous to the area. The word is believed to originate from the Arkan language (which is spoken in certain parts of Ghana). In English, it means 'sons of the earth'.
