A colonial-style adults-only hotel

We were at the Hotel Colon Guanahani taking advantage that we had been visiting the Hotel Jardines de Nivaria just across the street. It is a small but welcoming hotel which opened in 1995, and which since its refurbishment in 2014 is only for adults.

It is believed that the island of Guanahaní was the first island which Christopher Columbus set eyes on and visited on 12th October 1492, on his journey to the Indies when he accidentally ‘stumbled upon’ America. He called the island San Salvador, but Guanahaní means ‘sweet and smooth’ in the indigenous language.

General features of the Hotel Colon Guanahani

Initially it was in a colonial style, although after the big transformation which it underwent in 2014 it has more of a marine feel to it now.

The owner is always thinking about remodeling, improving the services which they offer (somewhat beneficial for any hotel and above all for its guests) and bringing its buildings up to date. By doing so he manages to have constant maintenance so that the level and quality is never lost.

Don Rafael Adrián, the owner, is a technical architect from Burgos who planned and designed the three hotels in the Adrián chain which are located in Tenerife. In recent years he has had help from his son Julián, who is an architect.

A large number of the staff have worked for the group for many years and that familiarity is sensed and appreciated by the guests.

Communal areas and services at the hotel

Being a hotel exclusively for adults, there is no entertainment apart from a few night-time musical shows, which guarantees maximum tranquillity.

The reception is welcoming and has aerial views of the outdoor area and the disco hall, where there is an activity and live music every night.

Near the main swimming pool there is a small spa, with a Jacuzzi and booths where you can have massages and different treatments.

Next to the entrance to the spa we found a small room with lots of books which the guests have left and which you grab to read.

The pool restaurant (‘La Pérgola’) opens at midday and night, serving tapas-style food but also with the option of a la carte.

The main restaurant of the Hotel Colon Guanahani has a nice patio. The food is served in a buffet area and another part is reserved for show cooking.

The hotel also has two bars, a billiard room, ping pong and a gym, which is in the open air but covered.

Rooms at the hotel

Almost all of the 154 rooms at the Hotel Colon Guanahani were renovated in 2014. There are two types of room, the difference being the size and in some cases the layout.

The standard and superior double rooms have a bathroom, dressing room and balcony with a light-coloured wooden floor. The rooms can either have garden or street view, and in the case of the latter when you close the glass door you completely soundproof the room.

The suites have pool view, and the superior suites are located in a privileged position in the hotel. On the terrace they have a Balinese bed and a shower for freshening up.

Getting there

The Hotel Colon Guanahani is just 150 metres from the Fanabe Beach. To get to the hotel from the south airport, we recommend following the signs towards Los Cristianos and taking exit 76 which leads to Costa Adeje. Go through the tunnel and take the first exit on the right. When you get to the roundabout take the Calle Bruselas and continue straight on. The hotel is on the right after crossing the second roundabout.

Final comments from the authors about the Hotel Colon Guanahani

The Hotel Colon Guanahani seems to us like an extremely calm hotel, where you notice a relaxing, special atmosphere. Just a bit of advice (because we know that hotels in Tenerife fill up particularly from October to April, and because it is such an exclusive hotel) – we recommend that you book far enough in advance so that you don’t end up without a room where you would like to spend your holidays in Tenerife.
