... probably the best practice course in the Canaries

Los Palos is the ideal golf course for anyone who wants to practice their short game or play on one of the most charming courses in Tenerife.

Introduction and Climate

Los Palos golf course is the ideal course for anyone who wants to improve their short game or teach a friend or family member to play this beautiful sport. The views from the course are generally very nice, but especially so when looking out towards the mountains.

Los Palos golf course is on the south of the island, so the climate is milder than in the north. It is also strategically placed to avoid the winds that affect the area.

Tenerife Travel Secret

The course is generally protected from trade winds, because the wind passes through Las Galletas and moves on. The wind from La Palma and the mountain in front of the course defuses them.

In Tenerife (like in other places), golf is considered an elitist sport. Golf Los Palos has gone some way to popularising it. Although it's a small course, lots of people are inspired to play there.

The course was opened in 1994 and designed by Integral Golf Design, owned by the renowned Spanish golfer José María Olazábal.

Prices and Opening Hours

Many residents and tourists alike go to this course to practise, because it is economical and is in a good location. A second round is usually very reasonably priced. Prices correct as of November 2017.

You can rent a buggy for €10, but people generally use a trolley. Golfers like to walk and free their minds from their everyday problems, rather than just finish the game or get round the course quickly.

Because it's a small course, those who go there to play mainly want to go for a stroll – one of the excuses of golf.

Usually people really like to play during the daytime. It is a small 9-hole course, so a round is very comfortable and pleasant to do at any time of day.

Playing in the evening (at 6pm or 7pm, before the sunset) is particularly pleasing to the eye because of the long shadows.

Services and General Features

The facilities are all in the same building, where you'll find the restaurant, reception (with a painting of St Andrews, the birthplace of golf), children's play area, golf shop, showers and changing rooms.

The restaurant's terrace, which has a great view of the course, is shaded in the morning and at lunchtime but receives the sun in the afternoon.

Los Palos also has a good driving range. It doesn't look out over the sea, but it is well located.

The course has 9 holes, so it isn't particularly long, but it is spacious and very good for playing Pitch & Putt. The advantage is that it serves as a learning centre for anyone who is just starting out or a great option for people who don't want to walk as much as a long course would require.

Pitch & Putt significantly improves the short game of experienced golfers. This is easy to understand, given that 65% of strokes on a normal golf course take place on the last 100 metres of each hole and that is also where most technical shots are missed.

All the greens have two tees – for men and women – but sometimes they are together. There are some holes with water obstacles and others with sand bunkers, both of which liven up the game and challenge any player, whether or not they have experience.

How to get to Los Palos

Travel to and from the golf course is easy, because it is just a few minutes from the airport and the touristy areas of Los Cristianos and Playa de Las Americas – very handy. From the south airport or the Los Cristianos area, head for the entrance to Las Galletas via Guaza. After crossing two roundabouts, you'll find it on the right-hand side of the road.
